One of the more challenging -- and costly -- tasks associated with setting up a small business is selecting furniture. Through this article, you will be provided with some basic information that you need to keep in mind when you go about looking for furniture to be used as part of your small business.
Should I Purchase or Should I Lease?
The basic question that you will need to ask yourself up front when it comes to the subject of furniture for your small business is should I purchase or should I lease that furniture. As with so many things in business, there are some benefits to be realized from leasing and from buying … depending on your particular set of circumstances.
Many new business enterprises simply do not have enough money in their budgets to spend on furniture purchases. If you are in such a position with your small business enterprise, you might want to consider leasing furniture up front. By leasing, you will not have to lay out so much money up front to obtain the items that you do need for your business enterprise.
However, you do need to keep in mind that if you lease furniture for an extended period of time, you will end up paying far more for that furniture than you would if you bought the items in the first instance. Therefore, on balance, leasing should be considered an option when a business is strapped for capital -- but, should be utilized only for a shorter amount of time and not for the long haul. Leasing furniture can be a transitional device until a small business enterprise ends up on better and sounder financial footing -- at which time the purchase of furniture should be considered seriously.
Should I Always Go For the Cheapest Furniture?
In a word, “no.” Certainly, if you are like most small business owners, you are operating on a tight budget. You do not have money to waste and you certainly want to realize savings wherever you reasonably can … reasonably can. The operative word: reasonably.
When it comes to office furniture, you simply do not want to sacrifice cost savings for quality. Certainly, you will be able to find very inexpensive furniture items for sale today. However, if you elect to buy a low quality item for a very low cost, you will find that you will be forced to replace your furniture constantly. In other words, any money that you may have saved at the outset will be lost over time as you continually go about replacing furniture items that did not last long because of poor construction, low quality materials, what have you.
By shopping around you will be able to find furniture of solid quality for a decent price -- furniture that you will not need to replace in the immediate future.
